Character playability

Who the player can control, who remains non-playable, and which roles depend on a game option.

01 · What it means

Category definition

Playability describes whether a documented character can be directly controlled by the player. It is separate from narrative importance: a protagonist may be non-playable, while a supporting character may be playable only in specific modes or chapters.

02 · How it is counted

Calculation

Each character record is assigned to its recorded playable status. The API’s playable flag is used as a fallback when the status field is incomplete.

03 · Read carefully

Interpretation

A higher playable share suggests more opportunities to inhabit a queer character, but it does not by itself measure narrative depth, agency, or quality of representation.

—Records analyzed

Percentage base: all documented character records.

—Categories represented

Includes Not recorded when values are missing.

—Category assignments

Normally matches the record total when every field is classified.

Research basis for playability

These sources inform the project’s definitions and safeguards. They do not make Press Q exhaustive, peer reviewed, or free from curatorial judgment.

LGBTQ Video Game Archive ↗

Shaw, Adrienne, et al. “About (Please Read First!).” LGBTQ Video Game Archive.

Supports the distinction between explicitly coded content, creator statements, queer readings, and incomplete research coverage.

Data Feminism ↗

D’Ignazio, Catherine, and Lauren F. Klein. Data Feminism. MIT Press, 2020.

Grounds the project’s attention to power, context, plural perspectives, and the limitations of binaries and apparently neutral classifications.
